What you say in your review is very close to my own impressions.
The game is very atmospheric despite the lack of real tension (at least before the climactic scene) and draws the player in through its cinematic touches and overall polish.
I didn’t find the game too short or as puzzle-less as some, but I have a different serious complaint – the huge amounts of walking inside and around the mansion. In part, this is caused by several events being just randomly triggered in different locations, which requires the player to search the entire building again and again to progress within the story. It would be nice if McCarthy featured a map of the house, or used double-clicking as means to get faster between locations.
Despite its flaws this is probably the most talked about AGS game of the past year, together with The Marionette and Ben Chandler’s games which have a huge cult following.
One little thing – your complaint about not putting a period after Mr.? It’s common practice in British English not to place a period following abbreviations such as Mr. or Dr. While I agree with you about things like “its” and “it’s”, this is actually correct usage.

Well what do you know, I guess you’re right. I suppose my American ignorance shines through again. Thanks for telling me.
